Given the choice, we’d all love comfortable, even, glowing skin, but unfortunately it isn’t always that simple. External stressors like pollution and UV rays, hormones, our diet and our genes can all have an effect on our skin, but achieving the skin you want is much easier if you know how to work with your skin type.
Our skin usually falls into one of five main types; normal, dry, oily, combination or sensitive, and it’s important to be aware of the characteristics of each. Some products might be ideal for oily skin, but aggravate dry skin types and vice versa, but once you’ve identified your skin type then it’s much easier to start building the perfect routine.
People with oily skin tend to have larger pores and a higher sebum content to their skin. If your T-zone is shiny after a few hours (even with powder) or you’re more prone to breakouts or large pores, then your skin is likely to be oily.
It’s a myth that oily skins don’t need hydration and stripping the skin of too much moisture can actually cause it to produce more oil to compensate. Use an oil free moisturiser morning and evening and look for purifying ingredients like salicylic acid or glycolic acid to cleanse skin. You could also use a clay mask once a week to help balance your skin and absorb excess oil.
Dry skin often feels tight and rough to the touch, so you’ll need richer products to help replenish dry skin’s moisture barrier. Look for creamy cleansers with ingredients like sweet almond oil or aloe vera and add extra moisture with a serum containing vitamin E or A.
A rich moisturiser is also a must; look for ingredients like shea butter and Omega 6 to deeply moisturise the skin.
People with combination skin usually have an oily T-zone and dry patches on the cheeks or chin, so it’s important to find a routine to help you balance both areas. Look for cleansing gels that won’t strip the skin of moisture (ingredients like aloe vera are effective for this) and follow up with a balancing toner containing peppermint.
A face oil is a good choice to add extra moisture in the evening and use gel cream moisturisers in the morning to hydrate skin without overloading it.
Technically, no one has completely ‘normal’ skin, so you’ll often see experts use the word ‘balanced’ instead. This skin type is characterised by an even moisture level, with no excessively dry or oily areas, or sensitivity. Cleanse your face with a gentle foaming cleanser morning and evening and use a moisturiser with an SPF.
At night you might need a richer cream (like our AHA Night Cream) and you could add in an antioxidant serum to keep your skin looking revitalised.
Sensitive skin is prone to irritation and redness, so you’ll need delicate products that don’t contain any harsh ingredients. Look for a gentle, sulphate free cleanser, alcohol free toner and a moisturiser that’s fragrance-free. Stay away from harsh exfoliants like salicylic acid and look for gentle, natural ingredients like aloe vera and chamomile.
