5 ways to protect skin

Your skin plays a crucial role in protecting your body, so it’s essential that you take the time to promote skin health and care for it properly.

Looking after your skin doesn’t have to be complex or completely time-consuming. You can have a solid routine which you amend throughout the year. This will quickly become second nature and just another step in your routine.

This is why it’s crucial to develop healthy skincare habits all year round - and it’s never too late to get started. Here are five winter skin protection tips you can easily incorporate into your routine.

Sunshine in blue sky

1. Protect your skin from UV rays

Perhaps this one goes without saying but UV rays emitted by the sun cause many types of skin damage which can affect you all year round - even in autumn and winter. Some of the long term damage includes:

  • Skin cancer
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Freckles
  • Signs of premature ageing
  • Discolourations
  • Benign growths

Using skincare products that offer UV protection is one of the most sensible ways to keep your skin looking fresh and healthy but most importantly - keep you safe.

2. Choose a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser

The wrong kind of soap can irritate dry skin - especially in winter. For example, regular bar soaps often contain irritating ingredients as well as strong fragrances.

Instead, wash with a naturally moisturising Cleanser which will not only clean your skin but also keep it hydrated and healthy. Our Foaming Face Wash has been clinically proven to increase hydration by 113%!

3. Invest in a night cream

As we have established, during the winter months that choosing a cream-based cleanser is a great idea. But as well as this to support your skin in retaining natural oils, at night, use a rich moisturiser or Night Cream on your face, such as the Rest & Renew Night Cream with natural AHAs. The night cream with help to clear off the dirt from your face and renew the face cells which prevent the skin from being damaged.

This essentially means that a night cream on your face not only keeps your skin nourished but also helps to repair any damaged cells.

4. Start using hydrating products for skin protection

Hydration is key for increasing your skin’s plumpness and radiance, so it's certainly worth layering a hydrating daily moisturiser over a quenching face serum (hyaluronic acid is great for this).

Also perhaps consider using a Mask for hydrating and brightening your skin. Clay face masks can be drying on the skin so perhaps opt for something with a lighter gel-based formula such as the Rescue Revive Sheet Mask.

Womans Lips

5. Don’t forget about your lips

Lastly don’t forget about your lips, this is an area which is all too often neglected. Applying a moisturising balm or petroleum jelly can help to heal dry, cracked lips and keep them from getting chapped - this is essential for the cooler months.

It’s important to invest wisely in quality skincare. That’s why at Herbal Essentials we are meticulous about our formulations. Unlike many brands, we avoid harsh, soap-based cleansers which disturb the skin’s natural moisture balance, or rough exfoliants which cause damage to the skin cells and cause inflammation.
