Having sensitive skin can be frustrating and finding the right treatments and solutions can be difficult, especially as everyone’s skin is different. Sensitive skin is one of the most challenging types simply because it can be caused by a huge variety of emotional and environmental factors - from a reaction to beauty products to a change of weather and stress.

What is sensitive skin and what causes it?

Sensitive skin is skin that tends to react to the application of various products. These products can include soaps, alcohol-based gels, exfoliants, products containing perfume, make up and more. There are lots of different symptoms of sensitive skin; you may find your skin is dry, itchy or flaky, your face may turn red easily, you may notice rashes, spots and bumps or your skin may crack and bleed.

If you have sensitive skin, it’s crucial to choose what you apply to your skin carefully. Finding the right skincare routine and applying products that hydrate, soothe and calm your skin is key. You should look out for products that contain minimal ingredients and ones that are free of alcohol, parabens and fragrances - anything that may damage your moisture barrier and cause it to dry out.

Sensitive skin routine and products

The main aim in your skincare routine is to preserve the moisture barrier on the surface of your skin. This barrier protects your skin from pollution, bacteria and other harmful particles our skin faces every day. The trick is to not layer your skin with multiple products, but to choose a few simple products carefully.

Cleanser for sensitive skin

Cleansing is an important step in any skincare routine, for any skin type. However, it’s important to be careful when cleansing sensitive skin as you need to remove dirt without irritating it. Choose a gentle, soap-free cleanser - our personal favourite is our gentle Cleansing Milk with Sweet Almond Oil and Aloe Vera.

Toner for sensitive skin

Another essential step, toner should be applied right after your cleanser. Toner is designed to further remove dirt and reduce inflammation. Look out for a refreshing, light toner to hydrate your skin without irritating it, such as our Refreshing Toner with Cucumber Extract and Rose Water. Remember, minimal ingredients are key.

Moisturisers for sensitive skin

Your cleanser and toner needs to be sealed with a light, hydrating moisturiser or cream. Choose a fragrance-free face cream to lock in moisture and keep your skin hydrated. A thick, smooth moisturising cream will help to soothe irritated skin and ensure you maintain a normal moisture level. We recommend our Nourishing Cream with Apricot Kernel Oil, Aloe Vera and Sweet Almond Oil.

At Herbal Essentials, our Clean Skin promise is that we will always intentionally stay away from chemicals that can cause irritation and dryness. To learn more about our gentle, kind-to-skin products, visit our online shop.
